Volumetric Weight Explained for Courier Parcels
Courier charges can depend on the space a parcel takes up as well as its actual weight. This guide explains volumetric weight and the measurements you need when booking a standard parcel with Go Girl Couriers.

Actual weight is the weight of the packed parcel on a scale. Volumetric weight estimates how much space the parcel occupies. A light, bulky box can therefore have a higher chargeable weight than its actual weight.
The usual comparison is between actual and volumetric weight, with the larger value used before any service-specific rounding or minimums. The selected courier service determines its divisor and weight rules.
How to calculate volumetric weight
Length × width × height ÷ the service’s volumetric divisor.
Measure all three outside dimensions of the finished parcel in centimetres. Use the divisor specified for the chosen service; different services can apply different rules.
| Measurement | Example parcel |
|---|---|
| Outside dimensions | 40 × 30 × 20 cm |
| Actual packed weight | 3 kg |
| Volumetric calculation | 24,000 ÷ 5,000 = 4.8 kg |
| Larger weight before service rounding | 4.8 kg |
This example explains the method. Confirm the applicable divisor, rounding and available service in your quotation.
Provide accurate parcel details
- Include the packaging, protective material and contents when weighing.
- Measure the longest outside points of the packed box.
- Record each parcel separately if you are sending several boxes.
- Use a suitable box and enough protection, with unnecessary empty space reduced.
- Update the booking if the final packed measurements change.
Our parcel packaging guide helps you prepare the box before measuring. Incorrect measurements can change the chargeable weight and final charge when the parcel is checked.
ColdPod parcels
ColdPod uses actual and volumetric weight when assessing the shipment, but customers receive a tailored quote after submitting their requirements. See what affects a medical courier quote and include the outside dimensions of your insulated packaging.
